Recently, I have noticed a lot of mention about the current sustainable fashion 'trend' and it being considered a new money making scheme, however this is simply not the case...
Okay, so what exactly is a trend?
a general direction in which something is changing, such as a fashion.
It’s something current, relevant, “of the moment”
Fashion trends can change daily - it can not stay unchanged and as soon as it reaches its peak on popularity it fades away!
Now lets look at this definition...
What is sustainability? - in relation to fashion
the goal of which is to create a system which can be supported indefinitely in terms of human impact on the environment and social responsibility.
So, yes eco fashion is providing a 'change' for the better, but this should (will be/has to be) a continuous effort that is maintained and supported indefinitely, and therefore is not truly a trend- or at least shouldn't be considered that way! (Basically this is the kind of change we don't want to change! ;)) Instead, we can think of it as a movement!
Giving up one fashion trend for another appears to be seamless, but giving up an addiction and bad habits to start clean ones (such as fast fashion to slow fashion) seems to be a little more testing...
It is best to do it in thoughtful steps, rather than going 'cold turkey!' Absorb the slow approach with conscious decision making and create new habits, and habits will stick! It's all about the way you move and what you are moving in!
Slow fashion, (the alternative to fast fashion and part of what has been called the "slow movement") advocates for principles similar to the principles of slow food, which are:
Good: quality, flavorsome and healthy food
Clean: production that does not harm the environment
Fair: accessible prices for consumers and fair conditions and pay for producers
But this all makes it more pricey right! So, it appears to be a trendy money making scheme!?
...At the end of the day, any clothing line is a business, yes, but it is what they do with their money and how and where their garments are made, which makes it ethical and sustainable.
Either way, any business hopes to make profit... so lets quit complaining about it being a scheme to make money. If it is a business for the better, then I certainly know where I prefer my hard earned money to go!! That is your choice! :D
On the other hand... go ahead and call it a trend :P
If eco fashion/ sustainable fashion/ slow fashion is in the limelight and shining in the news and at the core of social media, even if it is being tagged as a so called current trend, then I am also not complaining! ;) That is the beautiful power of marketing being used and benefiting the movement... If more people are being influenced by this awesome trend then that's great! :D
but let's just be really clear on one thing...
eco fashion isn't going anywhere!
Trend or no trend - let's just make it good and make it last!
